Creation of awareness about childhood cancer (use stock photos of brochures, posters etc.) We place our cancer education materials in targeted locations and organize campaigns to enlighten the general public on childhood cancer.
Setting up a Children Resource Library at the paediatric cancer ward of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan. The library is stocked with engaging books which are appropriate for ages 1 through 15 to help the children take their minds away from the anxiety and illness and to keep learning while they are away from school.
Provision of scarce cancer drugs for the paediatric cancer patients of UCH, Ibadan at affordable prices through Fumac Pharmacy, Ibadan (use stock photos of a pharmacy). The scarcity of drugs for treating cancer is a major contributor to the poor survival rates of paediatric cancers in our society. We help to improve this situation by providing drugs that are unavailable in most pharmacies and those that are available but are rather expensive.
Establishment of a work study program because the public hospitals we support in Nigeria suffer from poor patient-to-nurse ratio and hospitalized children can be left unattended for long periods at night, after their parents have been sent home. Through our work-study program, we recruit student-nurses to provide child-minding services on the paediatric oncology ward; and they earn a stipend.
Supply of extremely durable bedding, mosquito nets and children hospital gowns for the paediatric cancer ward (use stock photos of beautiful well-laid hospital bed in a ward). The typical wards in our communities have tattered bedding, torn mosquito nets and no hospital gowns at all. We seek to provide these for our children.
Set up of an easy-to-clean play pen in the paediatric cancer ward (use stock photos of a colour playpen). Even as children fight cancer, the ability to lead a near-to-normal life goes a long way in helping to manage stress. We hope to achieve some of this by creating a safe and hygienic play pen for them filled with toys, puzzles and board games in a corner of their ward.
Creation of a friendly ambience at the paediatric cancer ward. We understand the power that an agreeable environment has in patient treatment and how it conduces to soothing anxiety and calming stress. We plan to give this cheerful and lively atmosphere by decorating the walls with colourful murals of cartoons of under-sea and forest themes.
Promoting cooperation between cancer centres in our low-resource settings and those in other locations where more advanced facilities and expertise are available. Oftentimes, the best cancer treatment is only available abroad but the cost of seeking treatment outside one’s country is forbiddingly high. We intend to make it possible for children who cannot travel abroad to benefit from the advanced treatment abroad by fostering collaboration between our local physicians and those abroad.
