what we do.

we draw others’ attention

Ignorance and pity are two common reactions to childhood cancer in our society. Many people think only about grownups when they hear about cancer; they are totally unaware that there are children who are fighting cancer too. Some who are aware can become quite weighed down with pity for these young and innocent lives.

At AFACC however, we offer hope by raising awareness about childhood cancer and what must be done to identify and fight.

we lend a hand

There are several components to effective patient care but, in Africa, where cancer treatment centres are few, underequipped and under-funded, little or no attention is given to the resources needed to make hospital admission more pleasant or, at least, less stressful for children. Comfort is traded for convenience and a friendly atmosphere for a functional one.

At AFACC, we support these centres by providing materials ranging from scarce drugs to everyday hospital wear to lessen the burden on hospitals and enhance the recovery of children fighting cancer.

we give tangible help

People going through distressing times need a lot of support which can come in many ways. Children fighting cancer and their families will require emotional support, informational guidance and companionship to cope with the toll that the disease takes on them.

AFACC focuses on providing concrete and direct means to assist these children and their families.

we link teams

The old adage ‘Two heads are better than one’, remains true today as it was back then. Patients benefit tremendously when they are able to get a second medical opinion and when they have the support of a multidisciplinary team.

AFACC promotes collaboration among hospitals by linking cancer physicians from different health-centres together so that patients can reap from their combined databases, rich expertise and infrastructure.

Awareness about childhood cancer

Creation of awareness about childhood cancer (use stock photos of brochures, posters etc.) We place our cancer education materials in targeted locations and organize campaigns to enlighten the general public on childhood cancer.

Setting up a children resource library

Setting up a Children Resource Library at the paediatric cancer ward of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan. The library is stocked with engaging books which are appropriate for ages 1 through 15 to help the children take their minds away from the anxiety and illness and to keep learning while they are away from school.

Supply of materials

Supply of extremely durable bedding, mosquito nets and children hospital gowns for the paediatric cancer ward (use stock photos of beautiful well-laid hospital bed in a ward). The typical wards in our communities have tattered bedding, torn mosquito nets and no hospital gowns at all. We seek to provide these for our children.

Facts

Over 300,000 children develop cancer worldwide each year

In low income countries survival rates are as low as 10% compared to 80% in high income countries.
